The birth of Amber was in the summer of 2008. The seed for the founding of Amber was planted in the alleys of the slums in Kolkata (Calcutta); where we saw hope preponderating over the bleak and stark reality of oppression that plagued the very alleys of Bolbazaar (Slum area in Kolkata). “I have seen a crime & I have to report it” was the spirit in which inspired many youth in Singapore & globally. The need to tear away from apathy was intense and deep. Amber was then formally created to stimulate and lead the supply of youth towards the ever increasing demand for the restoration & protection of human dignity.
The spirit of the youth that of which proclaims, “I can change the world, no dream I have is ever too big or unrealistic and nothing is ever going to stop me”. This is the exact mentality that we want and need when dealing with such a large and relentless issue that may at times be extremely disheartening and discouraging. Our challenge was to push youth into an arena where they are fully connected to reality but yet fully connected to the possibility of turning dreams into reality. Needless to say, the youth now are going to be the leaders of tomorrow, by causing deep impact/transformation in their lives, we hope they would grow to be leaders with a heart of compassion.
Whenever we embark on any project, we rely on the 4 pillars we established as our core values to guide us. Firstly we believe that compassion comes from the love felt and given to each and every human we affect. From this love, we bring ourselves not as knights in shining armour, but as friends who have a deep concern for the wellbeing of the individual and community. That is how we truly can laugh with the communities, skip and smile with them and bear their burdens with them. Through their friendship, we share their dreams as they share ours, dreams that reality can barely touch, dreams that we help them work towards. Which leads us to our last pillar, to hope, hope not only for a better tomorrow, but to be that hope for those around the region that need that friend to walk with them.
To enable us to make our vision and values more effective, we believe that developing leaders in each community we affect is as important as affecting the community itself. Developing leaders who possess an unceasing vision and deep values is the call we are heeding to. To be able to inspire someone to lift themselves up to a point of an overflowing cup and become beacons that bring light into various community spaces is a cause we are resolved to act upon.
